Koh Phangan. Full Moon and Pancakes.

To say that Koh Phangan was fun, is an understatement. It was the funnest, craziest and most filled with partying week of my life. And I took breaks.
We arrived on the fourteenth of February. Valentine's Day. It was the Monday before the Saturday night of Full Moon. We walked the streets of Haad Rin that first night to find somewhere to eat dinner. We ate in a beautiful Italian Restaurant, MonnaLisa, that was topped eventually, but was one of our favourite meals of Koh Phangan. So nice that we returned on our final night.
We finished dinner at about eleven pm and the streets were desolate, isolated and sad looking. "Monday mustn't be a big night in Koh Phangan", we mused as we strolled around as new-to-Thailand-travellers. We decided to make our way to the beach to see what it was like at night time. "Quiet because it's Monday" we thought, perhaps with a few groups of stoners smoking and singing hippy songs.
We could not have been more wrong. As we walked down towards the beach, down the alley towards Cactus, we could feel the ground vibrate. It slowly grew up through our legs, our bellies, our minds. And once we reached the beach, that vibration of music and good feeling had reached our hearts. We were enthralled and encased by the power of the party. We had never experienced anything like it before.
The beach was dotted with masses of people, drinking from buckets and dancing like lunatics. We were in Party Heaven. A place none of us had realised we craved. A place I never thought I would actually enjoy. But I certainly did.
Above is a picture of our Koh Phangan rings, donated by a lovely Bucket Stall owner whose name I don't remember. She was nice though.

After an unforgettable night of dancing and making new friends, the two most memorable being those two boys from Fiji whose names I don't remember, we arrived home from the beach at 6.30am. I was greeted by a text message from my sister asking if she could call me, because she had news. Her boyfriend, now fiancé, had proposed to her on V-Day. Cue me bawling my eyes out in the Gulf of Thailand with happiness and being embarrassingly told by my sister to hang up.
And so the tone of the week was set. With the surprise arrival of another friend the next day (that I had co-planned) we, of course, ventured to the beach that night too, this time more aware of what to expect. And so followed a week of partying. We stayed out most nights until dawn, stayed in bed until 11.30am, had breakfast (included in our room rate and I proudly only missed it once!) then returned to bed until skype o'clock (3pm) most days. On the two days after I skipped the night-time beach, I took strolls after breakfast, got a facial massage, occasionally lay on the beach (completely shaded, of course, and covered in factor fifty).

We stayed in a fine ol' resort that did the job in a bungalow pee-break distance away from the beach. Our favourite staff member was a beautiful Thai girl called Pancake. I think she will forever stay in my mind as the epitome of Thai Beauty. I hope her life turns out well.
Full Moon Night finally arrived. The night after the real Full Moon because of a Buddhist Holiday on which we lost power for three hours. It was a little worrying, as we hadn't yet eaten dinner, and a little scary because we were on an island in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand.

It was everything we expected. Our Beach was taken over by tens of thousands of travellers, who arrived from Koh Tao and Koh Samui for the night, or ventured from the far side of Koh Phangan for the festivities. We donned our bright colours and glow paint and partied with the masses. I bailed earlier than the rest as the crowd was too much for me but I saw from the video played around the streets the next day that the party didn't even stop when the sun came up. 9am and the party was still throbbing at Drop In, the favoured techno haunt.
In all, it was a week I will never forget and a place I will never return to. I may explore the other side of Koh Phangan in the future but, for me, Haad Rin was a one stop shop and one that doesn't need to be revisited.
In short, I've done Full Moon, and I liked it.

My new mantra.

Found in a toilet that you had to whoosh water down to flush and couldn't put toilet roll into in Lotus Bar, Sairee Beach, Koh Tao, Thailand.

It seems I have neglected Thee...

I'm seven weeks into my travels. In the past seven weeks I have been on two continents (excluding Europe) and in four countries (excluding England and Ireland).
I have lots of stories, lots of pictures, a few regrets and mainy fond memories.
My first entry shall be an account of Koh Phangan. An island on which we partied until dawn and rarely saw daylight between 7am and 3pm.

Watch this space.

What to do: Swap Big for small and dear for cheap

Since I'm heading away for five months next weekend (eek) and will be budgeting my savings from now on with nay a prospect of further payment becuase of a lack of services rendered I've needed to cut back on product purchasing and spending. My current cutbacks are as follows, from head to toe:
Hair:
Volumising Trésemme Shampoo and conditioner have been decanted from bathroom staples into small 100ml bottles to get me through my first few days in Thailand. I've switched from my normal Aussie Curl Hair serum for Boots Expert Serum.
Face (cleaning):
Clinique mild cleansing gel/various neutrogena face washes and exfoliators and Garnier Toner have been replaced by the L'oreal Scrublet Face wash. I will still bring my Clinique Spot cream! My Moisteriser will stay the same, Oil of Olay, but I'm adding a factor 50 to the mix too. My current eye maker remover, johnson and johnson two phase is just running out so I got a tub of the Boots Fragrance free pads so that I won't need to be messing around with millions of cotton wool balls.
Body:
St. Ives exfoliator and any Shower gel will now be a mini Sanex that I picked up in Superdrug for a pound and exfoliating gloves that I got for a Euro in Fuerteventura at Christmas!
An now to the face, make up wise:
My usual face is: Clinique Even Better foundation, followed by any heavy duty concealor, loose powder and Benefit's Coralista. Then my eyes would usually be nude, followed by mid to dark brown shadow and a brown line and brown Mascara (or black for going out with a Mac Red lip). This shall be downsized to Natural Collection tinted Moisteriser (€2.99!!), my current concealor, and a Lancome travel kit I got as a present from my cousin which has eye shadows, lip glosses, concealor, pressed powder, mascara and blusher all in one. I may throw in some colours from my FrontCover set to go with the sun but in a nut shell this is me.

Plus the all important factors 50 and 30 for the 30 degree heat in Thailand :)

Done: Spend all possible extra cash

My new netbook is the biz. Look at her, she's pink. How can she not be amazing??

10.1 inch, she fits in my handbag! Can't deny her performance is nothing on my HP laptop, but for what I need it for, it's perfect!

Progress report: 2011 so far

Hmmm. When, I wonder, did I expect to start this project? It has not begun yet. I have three full weeks before I go away now. One weekend with be spent with an amazing friend in England (the trip on which I will buy a netbook :) ), one weekend will also consist of my going away dinner.

On a plus, I am almost at a point of completing one goal - Australia! I was accepted for a 6 month holiday Visa yesterday. I'm also writing more. So some resolutions have not been forgotten. Though it isn't February yet...

To do: Clear room of worldly possessions that have lost their worldliness.

I am, I admit, a horrific hoarder, a befuddled borrower and an indecisive Irene when it comes to the things I own and may no longer need. As I'm off to travel the southern hemisphere in a month, I need to declutter this bedroom of mine because I know what happens bedrooms in my house when people go off to the southern hemisphere - they are gutted, their contents is generally emptied/moved to another area or room and nothing is sacred or safe from the prying eyes of the rest of the family, or at least those who are left.
I must admit to being instigator of the 'clear out' when my eldest sister took her second trip south becuase I wanted her room. I no longer inhabit her room, but at that time, at the ripe age of eighteen, it was, and I am sure of it, the only thing that kept me sane on that summer of selling clothes and living at home. Though it is true that many would argue that binge drinking and disregarding all parents' wishes was not sane, at the time, I believed it was.
So henceforth a plan must emerge that leaves my bedroom, and its contents in absolutely tip top shape and ready for any eye that may want to pry.
Exit any old letters not fit for such eyes and such. Enter a beautiful bedroom, glistening with pride of place and lacking any clutter and ridiculous nick nacks that no longer mean what they once did. Bu-bye wee bear of relationship passed, so long mini skirt from 2004.
Hello Space.
